OCR: The Longmen Grottoes The Longmen Grottoes lie on the bank of the Yishui River of southern Luoyang in Henan Province. The carving work of the Longmen Grottoes began in 494 during the Northern Wei Dynasty and took more than 400 years to complete. 1352 grottoes, 750 niches, and 40 pagodas were carved and built here. There were also more than 100,000 Buddhist statues and 3,600 stone inscriptions. Longmen is the largest of the three major grottoes in China.
